Sgian Dubhs The sgian dubh, which in gaelic means black dagger, is now a purely decorative component of the highland dress outfit. The use of the word black could be for two different reasons. First of all, the handle of these knives was often made out of bog oak which is black in colour. Alternatively, it could remind us of a time when this was the highlander's weapon of last resort and kept hidden until needed, brought out and placed in the owner's hose as a matter of courtesy when in the presence of a welcoming host.
Two bladeless safety sgian dubhs are included in the selection here. The handle and scabbard are a solid plastic moulding with both stone and ball top available. When worn in the hose they look identical to any other sgian dubh. As they lack a blade, they are also easier to travel with.
